In 2001, Unesco, the Agency for the Assessment and Development of Technology (BPPT) and several non-governmental organizations held a workshop in Jakarta on waste management in residential areas as an effort to reduce waste disposed of into rivers and seas. One of the results of the workshop was the need for a communication platform to facilitate those concerned with waste management. On February 20, 2002 a forum called the Indonesia Waste Forum (IWF) was born. As a means of increasing organizational capacity, it was deemed necessary to form a new organization which was later named the Indonesia Solid Waste Association (InSWA). One of the InSWA programs is to assist the government in encouraging the creation of Law no. 18 of 2008, namely the Law on Waste Management..

InSWA is a professional organization engaged in waste management and technology, established in Jakarta on October 28, 2003. InSWA is non-profit, non-partisan and independent and is based on a new paradigm in waste management. The new waste management paradigm encourages waste management from sources with the main objective of creating a clean and healthy area. On the other hand, the utilization of waste management products in the form of energy, fertilizers or industrial raw materials is an added value..

Since its establishment, InSWA has realized that waste management will always be related to five aspects, namely Law and Institutions. Funding, Socio-Culture, and Technology. These five aspects are very important in an effort to carry out integrated and comprehensive waste management. This background of thought becomes the basic framework for implementing InSWA activities. The development of awareness, insight, knowledge and skills as well as technological transformation are the focal points of InSWA to meet practical and strategic needs in waste reduction and management. Based on the thoughts described above, InSWA focuses its activities on the field:

  • Solid Waste Advocacy
  • Solid Waste management Education
  • Member network development
